2019 READING GOAL UPDATE | Did I Read 150 Books?

Due to my large quantity of books I've been buying in the recent years i decided that the only way I can keep my above 30% read ratio is by reading 150 books by the end of the year. It was a tall order seeing as I failed this challenge last year granted I had to stop in October due to my grandfather's ill health and then his death in November.

REVIEWED: Surrender to the Highlander by Lynsay Sands

Title: Surrender to the Highlander
Author: Lynsay Sands

Issue: 5

There was trouble in the Drummond clan. The laird and his two sons are dead with the youngest now the new laird and missing with Lady Edith the woman that saved the Buchanan's sister.

Knowing that someone is plotting against them and poisoning Lady Edith after killing her family the Buchanans especially Neils would do anything to keep her safe.

Making this short since there isn't much to say. I've read this a while ago. August 2, 2019 to be exact. There wasn't anything to note about the book other than it has the same format used by Lynsay Sand and the annoyance has finally caught up with me.

The story was simple but it was enticing for me that I couldn't help flying through the book.

REVIEWED: If the Slipper Fits by Olivia Drake

Rating: 3.5

Title: If the Slipper Fits
Author: Olivia Drake
Series: A Cinderella Sisterhood
Issue: 1

A super loose retelling of Cinderella in the historical romance setting. And I can say that it's a stretch to a retelling so you should just ignore that.

The story starts with an orphaned teacher, Annabelle Quinn at a girl's school hearing about a prominent society lady coming to interview teacher's for a governess position. Not only that but it was governess to a young duke. A position all teachers desire to have. Realizing it was her only chance to get out of her terrible situation she pushes forward to the interview even with everyone in the school.

Lord Simon Westbury has the shock of his life finding a beautiful trespasser on his land one night claiming to be his nephew's new governess. He takes it as a ruse but something about the beautiful Annabelle fascinates and irritates him at the same time. When it turns out that it wasn't a mistake but an annoying interference he allows her to stay on trial basis.

Now they need to learn to coexist and keep their attraction under control.

Star Rating for Jesha is a Bookworm

The Star Rating of this Blog is solely based on the opinion of one person and does not reflect anyone else's opinion but my own. It should be remembered that I am one person reading and reviewing if you don't feel the same way you are free to leave a comment but I urge you to be courteous. Thank you. You can send suggestions via the comments too.

1 Star Rating
The One Star Rating means I didn't like it. It wasn't for me or it was rubbish in my opinion and I cried that I had to submit myself to reading this book. It wasn't just a matter of not like a certain This is a rating I believe I haven't given yet. This is a category for the books that in my opinion can not be redeemable.

2 Star Rating
This Two Star Rating means this book might not be for me. The genre or the story plot was not something that interested me. It could include DNF'ed books. DNF booked will be under this category because it was my fault for not giving it a try. It would be unfair to rate a book lower because the fault could solely be in my part hence my idea is putting it under this category. Of course that will all be under consideration when I give the rating but it can receive a One Star.

3 Star Rating
This Three Star rating means that the book in my opinion was alright. It was enjoyable enough but nothing sets it to have a rate higher than this. The book is enjoyable and recommendable with potentials to progress give or take. This is the usual star rating for books in my case.

3.5 Star Rating
This Three and a Half Star rating means the book was good and higher than the common three stars. The book was better than average but wasn't high enough to receive a four or five stars due to something. I truly enjoyed the book and would contemplate to rereading it in the future.

4 Star Rating
This Four Star Rating means that I enjoyed the book and it flew out of the pages for me but it wasn't enough to receive the perfect score. There is something within the book that holds me back in giving it a perfect score but I loved it and give it all the praise it deserves.

4.5 Star Rating
This Four and a Half Star Rating means that I loved the book enough to give it a high mark and high praises but the book has things that hinder me from giving it a full five star. There is potential for a five star but I felt it was necessary at this point to give it this and not higher.

5 Stars
This Five Star Rating means the book was phenomenal there is nothing I'd change on the book. It was perfect in my opinion or nearly so. This is the book that I'd recommend a hundred perfect to anyone that reads my blog. It is something that made me feel a rush of emotions while reading and after reading.

REVIEWED: A Little Bit Wicked by Victoria Alexander

Rating: 3
Title: A Little Bit Wicked
Author: Victoria Alexander
Series: Last Man Standing
Issue: 1

This is the first of the Last Man Standing Series. The series revolves around a penny bet between friends where the last man standing gains a penny or coin from each member and bragging rights. Since the bet seems to be of no true volition to the story I believe it can be read out of order.

The handsome Viscount Warton, Gideon Pearsall is incredibly attracted to the beautiful widowed Lady Chester. Their affair starts hot and heavy. He knew she was different from the other women but his past has always been present to haunt him.

Judith, Lady Chester has had her fare share of adventures but none compares to the way she feels towards Viscount Warton. She has fallen into bed with him in a dangerously fast manner. She can see that he would be different but fear and guilt is her prison. After losing her husband she vowed never to marry again.

Rating: 3.5
Title: Ashes of Revival
Author: Alex Shobe
Series: The Abdicate Series
Issue: 1

I've seen people rating it low on goodreads (and some gave it a 4 or 5 stars) but I decided to give it a decent score due to the potential of the book and the story. This is only the first book in the series and I can see that Alex has talent that simply needs to be polished.

This is a story of woman born to be queen and her struggle to stay in power to push forward her nation into the new age with many stuck with customs that belong to the dark age she is preparing to claim what is rightfully hers.

One decision changes her life. One decision that will show her value as a monarch.

WRAP UP: July 2019 A New Royal But Didn't Finish the Alphabet

It was indeed a challenge because I forgot that I had my prelim exams coming up and didn't have time to read much. Still I was able to gain royal status and save my kingdom by reading 10 books. That's right. Oh yeah!

Oh, and I inserted a few books not on Alphabetical order when I got bored.

Title: The Greek Claims His Shock Heir

The story starts with an old man's tirade over his estranged grandchildren's current life. Seemingly playing the role of tyrant in their lives he pushes each of them to marry men of his choosing. Men that could have hurt them rather than gone bad fast. Thankfully this is a Harlequin romances where nothing super vile happens.

Eros Nevrakis was optimistic when he was set to meet the businessman who owned his family's island only to come out with the knowledge that he had a son with his former chef Winnie Mardas. Feeling betrayed he is out to take his vengeance only her grandfather holds his island for ransom in return for legitimizing his son.

REVIEWED: A Cinderella for the Greek by Julia James

Rating: 3
Title: A Cinderella for the Greek
Author: Julia James

I read the book because a few friends on Goodreads rated it low. I knew I had a copy of the book sitting around and it seemed the perfect time to read it.

So the story revolves around modern day Cinderella figure Ellen who is a gym teacher at the local school. Treated poorly for her athletic figure by her stepmother and stepsister especially after the death of her father where she is left to fend off the vultures in order to keep the family home.

In comes Max Vasilikos a self-made businessman aspiring to look for a home fit his future plans and Ellen's home is perfect. Judging her appearance he surmises that he was looking at an ugly frog but he was shocked when she shed her exterior to show a beautiful body toned and lean. Desire quickly overtakes him. With comments from her stepmother he is led to believe that she was a bitter young lady reluctant to sell the house to spite everyone. He whisks her off to show her what she is missing only to end up falling to his carnal desire.

Pacquiao Boxing Matches and the Effect It Has on My Family

I'm a Filipino and in our country citizens watch boxing especially Pacquiao matches religiously. You can find the streets empty when the fighting senator is on. The only death to note are those of heat strokes at public viewings of Pacquiao matches or the elderly succumbing to heart ailment due to excitement.

In our house you can find the entire family tuned in from our house helper to my lola sitting in front of the TV feeling every shot. We exclaim when he lands a blow and gasp when he is hit. It's the way things have been for a few years now. This is a good way for our family to bond even those far from us. My father works abroad but on times like these we make sure to communicate even via Facebook. It's the same for my faraway aunts and uncles. For one day we are connected by a single fighter.

Next year if Senator Pacquiao fights again I am sure that the country will be united to watch him. We will be avid supporters until the day he decides to retire.

Back in the day my family bonded together over basketball there was a time when boxing wasn't the sport that united in the Philippines. Basketball is still a popular sport but nothing has the effect of a Pacquiao match.

This is a post I didn't have time to write since I wanted it out. I'll put a photo in there soon.

I Wonder: How Do You Keep Tabs of the Books on Your Collection?

I've been collecting books since I was in elementary school. There is an aunt who sent them to me on every occasion. She was one of the reasons I love to read plus my mom exposed me to Disney stories in their original form. Yeah, I read the book where Snow White had to deal with three obstacles and acted totally naive. Not the point there. Anyways, I wanted to ask how you keep tabs of the books on your collection? Do you have a specific way of tabulating them?

REVIEWED: A Scotsman in Love by Karen Ranney

Rating: 5
Title: A Scotsman in Love
Author: Karen Ranney

My star rating was originally a four but I changed it into a 5 after considering it. The reasons is the uniqueness of the story for me. Okay it's a simple story that is told well but the idea behind it wasn't just falling in love but healing as well. Two people that went through tragedy moving forward and not only for the person they are with but for themselves. They showed strength and I was down with that. I don't think I've read much about it.

So the story goes like this, after years of absence due to an accident that took his wife and child Robert McDermott the Earl of Linnett has returned to his Scotish estate to find a beautiful trespasser walking around his property. This is his new neighbor Ms. Margaret Dalrouisie a renowned painter who now lives in the cottage formerly apart of his lands. It was instant annoyance for him to find her but soon they connect on a deeper level.

Margaret came to Scotland after a benefactor gifted her the cottage. Suffering a cruel faith in Russia and left into poverty she hopes to live a quiet life fulfilling her life with her walks and residing without her beloved art. It changes when she meets a man that piques her curiosity and seemingly as broken as she is.

BOOK TAG: Mid-Year Book Freak Out 2019

Hello! I'm Jesha the owner of this blog. This is my first year in the blogging community and I've been very happy to do this. I'm passionate about books ever since I was a young girl and always felt a divide with my non-reader friends hence I created this blog to hopefully meet people. This year I've tried a few new things like joining my first readathon and a book club. It's an amazing experience for a girl from a rural area in the Philippines. I've been seeing a lot of people doing the tag so I decided to do it too.

REVIEWED: The Unexpected Child by Kate Walker

Rating: 4
Title: The Unexpected Child
Author: Kate Walker
Series: From Here to Paternity
Issue: 11

I'm sure of one thing after reading this book. I love classic Harlequin romances.

The book was enjoyable. It wasn't perfect but it was enjoyable more so than many books published today. There isn't plenty of events but it was a suburban life of two friend who created a life together and now must navigate.

Natalie has been in love with Pierce Donellan since she was eleven. The handsome man saved her life years ago and the young lady knew she was smitten only he didn't see her anymore than his friend. It changes when Pierce comes running to her after a broken engagement. One thing led to another and she finds herself pregnant with his child.

REVIEWED: To Marry a Scottish Laird by Lynsay Sands

Rating: 4
Title: To Marry a Scottish Laird
Author: Lynsay Sands
Series: Highland Brides
Issue: 2

At the time of reading I enjoyed it enough to give it star rating due to the fact that it was an easy read and I happened to enjoy it. The story had good flow albeit full of loopholes at times. Oh and was it just me or does the book cover look like Leighton Meester and for the male I was thinking KJ APA with long hair.

REVIEWED: An English Bride in Scotland by Lynsay Sands

Rating: 3.5

Title: An English Bride in Scotland
Author: Lynsay Sands
Series: Highland Brides
Issue: 1

I have been introduced to Lynsay Sands brand of Historical Romance with this book. I enjoyed it due to the simplicity of the book. It was easy to digest not much complication there. This was a book about passion and it was secured in that.

Annabelle was a young lady shoved into the convent at a young age after her parents sees her as nothing more than the unnecessary second daughter of the family while her sister was the heir promised to be bride to a Scottish Laird. It suddenly becomes Annabelle's job to marry the laird when her spoiled sister runs off with her lover. She plans on making her family and new husband proud but she has no clue in being lady since she was raised to take the veil.

Laird Ross MacKay comes to take the bride he was promised after years of battling for his title. He is now given the second child after his bride disappears. It would cause anyone to claim insult but not after he laid eyes on the beautiful young lady that will be his bride. He is satisfied with her after seeing her beauty and sweet nature.

WRAP UP: June 2019 Wrap Up! I failed the TBR.

Well, I set myself to read a lot of books and hoped to join the Buzzwordreadathon. And I did only I couldn't stick with it. I've never been someone with a solid TBR so I guess that was a difficult month for me. Anyways I still read a good amount of books even with my failure to read the ones I planned to read so I am happy plus I did read a few good books.

TBR: July 2019 Alphabethon & Medieval-a-thon

This year I made it my goal to tackle the books on my TBR pile. Books that have been there for years or  newly purchased. I want to make sure that I'm not buying books and allowing them to gather dust. I realized that readathons are a good way for me to get books off my TBR and I was entrigued by the alphabethon and the medievalathon. Since one is initially reading books in alphabetical order and the other being ranked highly for reading more books I decided to challenge myself and do them at the same time.

SongSong Couple Divorce: Difference in Personality or Pride?

Do you follow K-pop?

Even if I don't follow it religiously I know of Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo. The couple met on set of Descendant of the Sun in 2016 and married the following year in 2017. They were easily dubbed Golden Couple by their fans and given the couple name of SongSong. Gorgeous and seemingly perfect the world was shook on June 27th 2019 when the announcement of Song Joong Ki filing for divorce came out. It confirmed rumors and suspicions of the public that the couple have separated and wishes to move forward with an amicable divorce. They sited 'difference in personalities' as the reason for their divorce but is personality difference really causing people to divorce?

REVIEWED: Wrong Bed, Right Roommate by Rebecca Brooks

Rating: 3.5

Title: Wrong Bed, Right Roommate
Author: Rebecca Brooks
Series: Accidental Love
Issue: 1

First of all SHAWN.... Oh my.....

Steamy and enjoyable. This was an easy read. It wasn't difficult to fall in love with the main characters and their story. They were two people seemingly from two different groups of the social ladder with a similar problem- perception.

REVIEWED: Lord Carew's Bride

Rating: 3

Title: Lord Carew's Bride
Author: Mary Balogh
Series: Stapleton-Downes
Issue: 4

It wasn't my favorite. The characters seemed off for me. Both Samantha and Hartley lacked in passion. May it be passion for outside pursuits or life. They didn't feel alive. It was too idealistic for my taste. It could have been better.

REVIEWED: The Ideal Wife by Mary Balogh

Rating: 4

Title: The Ideal Wife
Author: Mary Balogh
Series: Stapleton-Downes
Issue: 1

I read somewhere that Mary Balogh followed a format in her and her early releases yet i can see that it works. I truly believe in the saying if it's not broken don't fix it. She's able to create scenarios unlike each other while following her format. And I can credit her painting a vivid image in my mind.

REVIEWED: Wrong About the Guy by Claire LaZebnik

Rating: 3

Title: Wrong About the Guy
Author: Claire LaZebnik

I was disappointed since I've waited to read this for so long  the expectation was huge for me and it sadly did not deliver for me.

The main character, Ellie was a total brat. She refuses to admit that she is a spoiled brat even though the signs are clearly out there. She gets away with everything because she is rich, pretty, and smart. Through out the story she shows how superficial and single minded she can be. She pushes everyone to do her bidding. Refuses to acknowledge what is in front of her. It took a series of events for her to see a good thing that was right there. It raises a question if she was blind or turning a blind eye because one is a mistake two is a pattern.

Other than Ellie being a brat everyone else in the story was endearing except maybe her pushover best friend. If I can talk to her I'd tell her, 'sweetheart they can't treat you like a doormat if you don't let them'
